Fishing Line Recycle Bins
Installed at Hillsdale Lake!

A new recycling program offers a solution at Hillsdale Lake.
Hillsdale Water Quality Project, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) installed three monofilament, or fishing line, recycle bins in March.
The bins are located at the Jayhawker Boat Ramp, Marysville Boat Ramp and the Spillway.
The monofilament recycling bins are important to use to keep the fishing line off the shores and out of the water.
Gary Lucas, Hillsdale State Park KDWP Manager, emphasized the importance of collecting monofilament.
“I am excited and thankful to have the monofilament bins in place,” Lucas said. “Abandoned monofilament can be deadly for entangled birds and other wildlife. Monofilament can foul motor props and turf mowers.”
The Project’s Information Specialist Jennie Fyock encourages properly discarding all recyclable materials.
“We hold many clean up events throughout the year,” Fyock said. “It is always amazing how much fishing line is collected by volunteers. The bins create a convenient, simple way to recycle fishing line so that it can be used for other useful things.”
Project staff will collect and submit the collected fishing line so that it will be cleaned and recycled into items such as: tackle boxes, underwater fish structures and other fishing related items.
The three monofilament recycling bins provide convenience at accessible sites.
“I hope our lake users will use the bins for old fishing line and not leave it lay for someone else’s trouble,” Lucas said.
Missouri Stream Team, in partnership with Berkley Pure Fishing, donated the PVC monofilament recycling bins to Project for use at Hillsdale Lake.

The Project recently received Johnson County Stormwater Management Advisory Council grant funding for this and many other activities through the Johnson County Stormwater Management Program.

2007 'WRAPS' Meetings Completed

Four public meetings were held to gather public input for a WRAPS document. The meetings were held in Spring Hill, Edgerton, Wellsville and Gardner. The Hillsdale WRAPS- or Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy-
is a planning tool for restoration and protection measures within Hillsdale Lake's Watershed. It will be a tool
used to implement best management practices, educational practices and monitoring and assessing of the
Hillsdale Watershed's water resources. It combines public comments from all over the watershed to
create a master WRAPS plan.
